For some time now, the design of smartphones has improved a real barbarity, and now, fortunately, we hardly find phones finished in plastic in the medium range or in the high range, contrary to what happened three or four years ago. Metal, glass and ceramics invade the back of our phones, giving us a much more premium feeling than we had a few years ago. But what hasn't changed since then is the eternal question: should you put a case on your phone or not?

According to the figures, more than 43% of smartphones have already fallen, and 20% have already been soaked in water. So it's only natural that you should be very concerned about the future of your Smartphone. Although some people think these accessories are ugly or outdated, it must be admitted that without protection, your phones are at considerable risk. Good news: there are now aesthetic protective cases and covers adapted to your needs, for all smartphone models to protect against possible accidents. Indeed, even if you find models on the market that claim to be "standard", nothing beats well-targeted protection.

What are the different types of protection for smartphones?

No one is safe from an accident on their smartphone. Understand that at the slightest impact, you run the risk of damaging your ports, cracking your camera or altering the external components of your phone, hence the great need to choose the right back cover for your phone. But before choosing the model to install on your device, it is important to distinguish between all the types available on the market:

Silicone or TPU bumpers and Cases

These turn out to be the most popular options among users. The bumper offers less protection than the case as it only protects the edges of the phone. The millimetre edges prevent the screen from coming into direct contact with the floor in the event of a fall, and many have a soft material that prevents the phone from slipping.

The bumper is recommended for those who do not want to sacrifice the original appearance of the phone. Sometimes it is the cheapest solution.

The silicone and TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) covers are the most popular. They come in multiple designs and combine with other materials to provide decent protection for your mobile. Most of them have a rubber finish that offers a better grip and prevents you from slipping, although sometimes this generates some friction when storing it in the bag of your pants.

Brands such as Spigen, Speck and Griffin offer good models and sometimes surpass the official covers in the cost-benefit ratio.

Pouch Phone Cases and Covers with Lids

Most popular with executives and female buyers, the full and lid covers offer good protection and have an elegant design. Some are made of leather and can hold credit cards, subway cards or even a small stylus. Depending on the model is the protection, as some have uncovered sides (the lid, for example).

They protect your mobile from falls, scratches on the screen and casing if you have keys or coins in your trousers and they are easy to store. Some have magnets to make it easier to close the lid, while others are folded as a shelf, similar to iPad smart covers and other tablets.

The prices vary depending on the brand and material; if you want some leather, you will have to add zeros to the final cost.

Rough and Tough Phone Cases

These two are the safest, but the least practical. The rugged casings offer good protection to your mobile and have reinforced corners to prevent damage in falls. Most have a rubbery material that prevents slipping (especially if your hands are sweating) and has pop-out buttons to make it easier to interact with your phone.

The bad? They're big, add weight to the phone, and won't fit in your trouser bag. In this case, tough phone cases are a more practical option. The polycarbonate cover has less grip, but usually has sections with rubber or texture so that the mobile does not slip.

The price varies depending on the degree of protection. There are specialized brands such as Ballistic, Griffin or Trident in the rugose field, while Urban Armor, Body Glove, Speck and OtterBox offer good results in the tough category.

Phone cases for specific needs

The phone cases serve a purpose to protect our phone, but there are times when we look for something additional. For example, you might be an engineer working on a construction site or maybe an explorer, in this case, a rugged case with dust and water protection would work perfectly.

If you're an athlete, a cover that fits your arm would be perfect while you run. Maybe your phone's battery won't charge as it used to (or you're still using iPhone 5), in this case, you can buy a case with an included battery that gives you an extra charge to end the day.

Mophie is a popular brand of the battery-powered phone case, and Lenmar, MaxBoost and Otterbox all have attractive options.

Check that the case is for your phone model.

When you go to buy the case, bring your phone and try it to make sure you won't have any problems. If possible, also bring the headphones you use and verify that you can connect them to your phone after inserting it. While all models have a 3.5mm hole, the size of the phone case sometimes makes it difficult to connect them to the entrance correctly.

Confirm that the ports for inputs, buttons and camera match those on your phone. In the case of the camera, check that they do not obstruct the lens. Some cases have edges that generate an annoying vignette when taking pictures or a strange effect when using the flash.

If you don't want a case, we understand, there are people who prefer to keep the original manufacturer's design intact. That being so, we send our best wishes so that your mobile never kisses the pavement.
