Sleep is an essential part of our lives and it’s important that our bodys get enough sleep on a regular basis. Without this we can struggle to function correctly and be more prone to picking up infections, as our body becomes run down. If you struggle to get to sleep, there are ways in which you can improve your environment in order to achieve a better night’s rest.

We all know that we should get enough sleep, but with our hectic modern lives, this isn’t always achievable. According to research carried out by YouGov, 60% of us don’t get enough sleep. We might all be aware of the saying about getting eight hours sleep every night, but that doesn’t mean we follow the advice: 59% of people have less than seven hours a night.

How to improve your sleep

There are products you can buy that may improve your sleep patterns, as well as creating an environment more conducive to sleep.

Mattresses

Having an uncomfortable or unsupportive mattress can affect your sleep. Mattresses should be able to hold your weight and body shape correctly. If you are positioned properly on a mattress, there shouldn’t actually be a need for a pillow.

A mattress that doesn’t provide enough support can lead to neck or back pain and cause you to toss and turn in the night. Problems can arise from a sagging mattress or one that is either too firm or too soft. It’s also important that your bed and mattress is large enough to accommodate you, as it can be uncomfortable feeling like there isn’t enough space. Memory foam mattresses can actually help you rest better. Mattresses should ideally be changed every 10 years.

Mattress toppers

If you feel like your mattress is impacting on your sleep, you don’t have to go out and buy a new one. Mattress toppers can add an additional layer to your current mattress. This will revive it and create a more comfortable bed. Memory foam mattress toppers are ideal, as they adapt to your body, reducing the number of pressure points and leading to a more peaceful night’s sleep.

Bedding

Having the wrong type of bedding can also have a negative impact on our sleeping. They can lead to you becoming too hot or too cold, making it harder to get to sleep or waking you up in the night. You should use a duvet with the right tog rating for the season; higher in winter and lower in the summer. There are also materials available that are more breathable and help to control your body temperature.

More and more people are suffering from allergies, such as hayfever. According to Allergy UK, 20% of the UK population have some type of allergic rhinitis, which can affect our sleep. If you are a sufferer yourself, there are specialist anti-allergy duvets available that can help you sleep better.

Sleep problems shouldn’t just be left alone. Instead, look at ways you can improve your sleep and you’ll instantly realize how much more refreshed you feel in the morning.
